The Republican Border Scam

Some Republican's believe Biden's lifting of Trump's border rules in 2020 made America less safe. That's false.

Trump's wall actually made the border easier to get through. It's easy to get over using a rope ladder, and people cut through it with $20 saws. Plus, almost all the wall that was built just replaced existing barriers. 3/4 of the border is unprotected.

The only way to secure the border is with more border patrols and more judges, so that we can keep review asylum cases quickly.

It's Congress' job to make laws. Trump's rules actually violated those laws. Yes, Trump's rules let fewer people into America. But the criminals were still getting in, either getting through the wall or getting through the border areas that had no protection. The laws only kept law-abiding people out, people that laws intended to let in.

To the people who were hurt by criminals coming into America: Trump's rules would not have protected you.

On average, there's less crime among immigrants and immigration, on average, is good for the economy by creating more demand for goods and services. Studies show that immigration does NOT lower wages. Immigrants tend to get the low-paying jobs, while the increase in demand opens up some higher-paying jobs that are mostly taken by low-paid American workers. The increase in both low-paid and higher-paid jobs averages out to not raise or lower average wages, but it does give more Americans higher wages. So immigration is good both for the economy and for low-paid American workers.

By lying and saying immigrants were dangerous, Trump gave Americans a false fear of immigrants. Then he made his illegal and largely useless rules to keep immigrants out, lessening the bogus fear that he had created. This was good for his popularity, at the cost of preventing the economy from growing, and preventing some Americans from getting better-paid jobs.

This is what Trump does- he does a lousy job, hurting people, while claiming that he's wonderful. He hurts America to benefit himself.

Since Trump’s rules kept law-abiding immigrants out, it made it easy for Republicans to lie and say that Trump made the border safer. This allowed them to avoid doing the real work of passing an immigration reform bill.

That's why Biden rescinded Trump's rules, to pressure Republicans in Congress to do their job. But instead of doing their job, for over three years they avoided it, choosing instead to adopt Trump's strategy of complaining. When Biden, Harris, and the Democrats in Congress finally pressured them enough to do their work and agree on a bill, Trump bullied them into abandoning the bill so he could keep complaining.

Trump doesn't solve problems. He takes advantage of them to make people afraid so they believe his lies that he'll make them safer.

There are real problems with the border. But the Republican scam just ensure those problems persist.
